Spring Has Arrived, and Oh, What a Show It’s Putting On

There’s a moment every spring when I walk into my flower shop and the scent hits before the lights are even on. That’s when I know the season has turned. The buckets are full, the colours are loud, and the whole space smells like something worth waking up for.

Freesia is the one that gets me every time, sweet and citrusy, perfuming the whole room from a single stem. Anemones show up dramatic and moody, dark centres surrounded by petals in white, deep purple, and candy pink. Poppies bring fire, thin papery petals in reds and oranges. Sweet Williams cluster together in rich magentas and crimsons, and carnations come back into their own with ruffled blooms in shades that pair with almost anything.

Stock is a favourite this time of year, tall spires of ruffled blooms with that gorgeous clove-like scent, doing most of the work in a bouquet without needing help. Pair it with airy, branching blossoms and you get movement and softness winter just doesn’t offer.
